Romans 8:28 – We know that God works all things together for good for the ones who love God, for those who are called according to his purpose.

Few people have embodied their commitment to purpose in recent times to the degree that Queen Elizabeth did. When taking the role as Queen, she promised a life of service. As shared at her funeral, there are few people who have fulfilled their commitment to purpose as well as Queen Elizabeth has.

Given the choice, Queen Elizabeth would have chosen a different purpose than being Queen. More than once, she acknowledged that she would have preferred to be a horse breeder than the Her Royal Majesty. When she made the pledge to lead her country as Queen, she took these vows seriously and spent the last 70 years fulfilling the promise she made. A remarkable run of service that will be awfully difficult to replicate.

I am not an insider when it comes to the Royal family. I’ll defer to the people who knew her best. The people who spoke at her funeral reflected upon how it was her faith in God that allowed her to uphold her purpose and the promise that she made. Her faith provided a bedrock through which everything else was filtered. Faith provided the safety net for helping her steer her purpose and mission; something many aspire to and yet not everyone fulfills.

Discovering one’s life purpose is a daunting task. For many, their purpose may shift over time or become clearer. This is what happened to me. Now in the later part of my life, I still struggle with knowing exactly what my purpose should be. I am seldom clear exactly what God yearns for me to do with my time, energy, resources and priorities. At times, if feels it would be so much easier if these desires where clear for myself. But alas, they are not.

Not everyone’s purpose is as clearly defined as Queen Elizabeth’s. Or Jesus Christ’s. More often, we flounder and try some things out, hoping something will become clearer. Sometimes this works. Other times, we are still floundering. And this is OK. Not everyone’s purpose is as clear-cut as for these two.

Purposes and missions will change throughout our lifetime. Your purpose when raising small children will not be the same as when it comes time to care for aging parents. What is a passion today can be replaced by something later on. Let it happen. One of our gravest mistakes can be to stop listening for God’s purpose in your life. I shuttered to think how often God has spoken to me specifically about something tied to my life purpose and I was so busy doing my own thing that I completely missed the ques.

The great thing about God? Even if we miss the ques or ignore that strong hints or decided to go a different path, God can still create something amazing our of our lives. Often, there is more than one route to something important in our lives. Even if we completely muff it, God can still orchestrate something amazing to happen within our lives, if we only grant God the ability to do so. It’s when we assume that only WE can know what is best for our life purpose that we run into trouble.

Jesus’ purpose was front and enter in his life. He lived it Every. Single Day. Queen Elizabeth’s purpose was very clear and she remained steadfast to this all her days. Amazing, both are continuing to influence purpose even after they are gone. Let me be clear: Queen Elizabeth is not at the same caliber as Jesus. Yet, she certainly was a person committed to her purpose.

Whether you are totally clear about your life purpose right now or not, I simply encourage you to learn from those people who dedicated their lives to their life service. May how they lived inspire you and us. And keep listening. Allow yourself to be guided. Be surprised when something totally out of the blue comes your way. Give yourself space to embrace it tentatively before complete writing it off. For good things will happen when we allow God to help direct our life’s purpose. What an amazing promise we have been given.

For the inspiration of those committed to their  life purpose, I am very grateful.
